Teaching Practice
Special Educational Needs

The National College of Art and Design has designated SEN placements as part of the ITE programme, whereby student teachers are immersed in SEN settings, getting the chance to experience working with learners who have special educational needs (SENs).

Stewarts  Care - The Coach house
Palmerstown, Dublin

Operating from two main sites at Palmerstown, and Balgaddy in South West Dublin, and several satellite residential and day service centres throughout West Dublin and North Kildare, Stewarts provides extensive services to people with an intellectual disability. At present, Stewarts supports approximately 800 service users. Many families are also supported within their homes through Stewarts' Home Support Programme.

Their mission:

We aim to support and empower people with an intellectual disability to live meaningful and fulfilling lives by delivering quality, person-centred services, provided by a competent, skilled and caring workforce, in partnership with the person, his / her family and community and statutory authorities, including advocates.

Reflection on placement: This placement was a truly wonderful experience and I can't thank NCAD and the team at Stewarts Coach house enough for making it possible. The service users were completely inspiring and it was a symbiotic learning experience, I encouraged learners to engage in new forms arts and craft and they taught me more about joy and creative expression than I could have hoped for. This was an essential part of my 4 years of teacher training at NCAD, specifically in the development of planning for differentiation within any classroom setting.
